I'm procrastinating today. I've been on Facebook, Hotmail, and now this. Today is Dead Day. That means for students they can study all day and start finals tomorrow. For faculty it means a marathon of meetings and receiving emails from students asking for extra credit.
Here is what I've heard in the last two days....the list will be triple by next Friday as next Saturday is commencement.
1. I didn't turn in the assignment a month ago because I forgot to check my emails. (Number 1...the assignment was due ONE MONTH ago and Number 2....college students will die before they let one day go without checking emails!)
2. I have a "C" in your class. What can I do for extra credit to make an "A" because my parents said I have to have a 3.0 this semester? (Okay....Number 1...am I correct...you didn't do the work all semester but the last week of school you want me to GIVE you an "A"?)
3. My teacher doesn't like me so she GAVE me a "C" (Ummm....I wish I could just give grades. All my grading would be done by now if I could.)
4. I have had to work a lot of hours in my job so I couldn't do your work for your class. Do I still have to do it? (Why...of course not....I'll just GIVE you an "A."!)
5. I lost my textbook for your class three weeks ago. What do you want me to do so that I can make a passing grade in your class? (Oh..nothing...everyone else had to do the work but you don't...by the way...you lost it 3 weeks ago and just now concerned??)
Do you read sarcasm in my voice? Right now I'm looking at my office phone and I have 5 messages. I bet I can tell you what they are without even listening to them.
All of my classes are taught online and every other Sunday at midnight their work is due. If it is not in I enter a zero for their grade. Several students have zeroes from over a month ago and are just now concerned.
I've procrastinated long enough and now back to grading. Aren't you glad I'm not grading your paper right now?
Note: I have 3 family members in college or about to go. One in seminary, one graduating (yes..you Jess!) and one starting law school. They would never do any of the things I mentioned above. Gary would probably tell you that I did some of the things mentioned above though. Maybe not exactly, but....

Yes, I'm glad you are not grading my paper right now! Oh those college days! Man, I wish I had known all I had to do was e-mail or call a teacher to GIVE me an A! :) Ha!
I have to chuckle....What makes these college kids think they can get away with this stuff, the real world is waiting for them!!!
HUGS and Good Luck with them,
Karen
Fortunately it's only about 10% who cause 90% of my work! The majority of my students are the complete opposite but this week I've spent 90% of my time on 10% of my students.
So familiar! I had a few students who would do the least amount at the last possible moment and wonder why they didn't have an A!
I would tell them I don't ever want the medic responding to MY emergency to be the one who thought the least amount at the last possible moment was providing geniune "Patient Care"!
Betsy,
This post really made me chuckle
Your students sound a lot like my students when I worked in the financial aid office - only the questions were a bit different.
(just for example: What do you mean I can't get more financial aid than my budget? What's an over award? or how come you can only give me this much in stafford loans - what right does the government have to limit the eligibility?). I'm sure you get the picture.
Do I think you sound sarcastic? Nope, I think you sound exactly like I did up until four weeks ago when I retired.
But knowing you, you will do everything in your power to give these kids what they need. :)
Blessings my friend.
Sue
