Weather Forecast Ice and Snow --- Time to Hit the Road

And, hit the road we did. Snow and ice was in the forecast. Gary and I decided that this time we were not going to be stuck at home for a week without electricity. The snow and ice was forecast for Thursday night. We decided to head to Oklahoma Thursday afternoon right after Gary got off work. Then, the forecast changed to earlier so we decided to leave Northwest Arkansas at 1:00 p.m. to beat the weather. Before you start thinking about how stupid we are to get on the road when everyone else is trying to stay off...I have an all-wheel drive vehicle. It drives very good on snow and ice.

Well, the weather was coming from Oklahoma City and we were headed right in it! About an hour and a half in the trip we wondered just what in the heck we were thinking. My sister kept calling to check on us. She couldn't believe we were out on the road. Frankly, I didn't see many cars on the road. Just two crazy old grandparents. Even the Governor declared Oklahoma a state of emergency. Two hours in the trip we had to stop and knock the ice off the wipers. This is what we drove in for three hours! We thought about trying to make it to the cabin at Eufala but knew the road would be too bad.

We finally made it to Brent and Jessica's house!

The next morning Gary and Bennett had quite time while everyone else was asleep.

Bennett was still trying to wake up and we were reading books in his bedroom. I got up to get some more coffee. When I came back this is what I saw. He didn't see me so I rushed to get my camera. I didn't take the time to focus it because if he saw me taking his picture it would be all over. Isn't this precious! He is such a reader. So is Anna Claire.

Ma, Anna Claire, Bennett and Granddad watching YouTube videos of "funny dogs." I held my breath every time Gary found another YouTube video. When you do a search on "dogs", well, who knows what the video will be of. I knew this wasn't the time to tell Bennett about the birds and the bees. It was Brent's idea, though. He does it all the time.

Anna Claire making Valentine cookies. She told me later that she only got cookies on special occasions because they were too sugary. She does not have a sweet tooth, never really has.

Saturday morning Brent asked if we wanted to go to the cabin in Eufala. I said "Absolutely not!" I sure didn't want to get stranded with two babies. Gary wanted to go. Jessica wanted to go. I told Brent, "Well, check the roads on the Internet." He did and he said that the state police said the roads were "slick and hazardous." For most families they know what that means. For my family, it's "Oh, the roads are slick and hazardous. Who's ready to travel?" As long as I can remember Gary and I have always enjoyed getting out in the snow (in a warm vehicle, of course).

So, after a short discussion, Gary and I headed out with the kids. Brent and Jessica had a chocolate festival to go to and they decided to come later. Bennett gets his sweet tooth naturally from his mommy.

Gary was getting Bennett ready for the car ride. Bennett insisted, big time, on wearing his bathrobe instead of coat.

Bennett and Ma on Sunday morning. I love it when Bennett walks up to me and says "I cold..Ma...I cold." I respond back with "Do you want to cuddle?" and he responds back with "Uh hum."

Bennett with his golf bag. He never did find the golf balls.

Watching cartoons. They were so intent in their facial expressions. They don't watch tv a lot but when they go to the cabin they get to watch a few cartoons.

Brent, Anna Claire and Jessica. (Bennett got too cold and he only lasted a minute or so.)

After many kisses to the grandkids we headed home. On the way home we called Shane for an update on the move. He and Jess are new homeowners! They are moved and settling in.

When Gary and I got home we were looking at the pictures. When we saw the pictures of the road going toward Oklahoma on Thursday we both didn't remember the roads looking that bad! They were, though.

I have two of the cutest videos to download but they will have to wait until tomorrow.

Betsy,
How FUNNY this is because when I first started reading this post and you said you were going to OK, I thought of the news reports from late last week of the OKLAHOMA weather. I will tell you that crazy did enter my mind :) but then we are grandmas and snow and ice mean nothing when grand kids are at the end of the trip. I am glad you made it safely and the pictures sure tell a wonderful story.
You and Gary are amazing - and so is your family.
Hugs my friend,
Sue

I have to chuckle--slick and hazardous means nothing to my husband, must be all those years of driving for the sheriff's department--he would have gone out too!! Glad you made it safe and sound. Of course we live where the roads are like that most of the winter so either you learn to drive them or you are home ALOT
HUGS,
Karen

We also understand the crazy grandparents bit. The mountain roads in NC and TN were littered with abandoned vehicles, but Kathy and I trust the "muscle memory" of growing up in the snow belt. When there are kids and grandkids to visit, no little snow storm is going to slow us down. The photographs are absolutely precious. I'm beginning to think I need a better camera.
