Goodbye Cal Orr

This is a picture of Cal in 1999. Brent's truck is in the background.

We will miss you so much. Cal is Brent's dog but we have raised him since Brent went to college in 1997. Gary and Cal have been best friends and in Cal's younger days Gary would take him to the lake on Sunday afternoons. Cal is a chocolate lab.

If we ever left the fence gate open Cal would be out of here in a flash but he always came back. No matter what.

The last couple of months have been very hard on him. Old age and arthritis have taken its toll. Maybe we should have done something before things went downhill so fast but we didn't. We took him to the vet Friday and the doctor said that he could give him some steroids that would give us maybe another week with him but maybe so, maybe not. Cal has been in so much pain for a long time. We said our goodbyes and then the doctor gave Cal a shot. A minute later the doctor checked his heartbeat and looked at us and said "He doesn't have a heartbeat." Cal went to sleep oh so peacefully. Gary put his hand over Cal's eyes and closed them. The doctor was so gentle and kind. Cal knew he was loved so much, even at the end.

Sid, the black lab, has been so protective of Cal. When Gary tried to help Cal stand up Sid would get a little upset with Gary. I know this is hard on Gary but it is ten times harder on Sid. Sid has always had Cal.

Yesterday we knew it was the day. Cal knew it. He was so ready to go.We love you, Cal.

Oh Betsy,
Ron and I have walked in those shoes a few times during our marriage...
and not one single time could we justify one more day. When it's time for those beloved pets to leave this world, it is the very last - but best - thing we can do for them, aside from the love they always knew they had. Praying that the days will get easier. I truly believe that dogs go to Heaven too.
Rest in Peace, Cal.
Hugs,
Sue
