Bali Trip: Kecak Monkey Dance

The Kecak is a form of Balinese dance and was performed by 70 men. It is also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant. The performers wear checked cloth around their waists and continously chant "cak" and throw their arms up in the air as though in battle.

Before the dance starts the priest comes in and gives the offering. This also happened at the Barong Dance. The men will come in and sit around the flickering light of the aoil lamp chandelier and they will say over and over "Cak-cak." Their bodies will shake in unison.

Depicting a battle from the Ramayana where the monkey-like Vanara helped Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana.
